What Is Hydrostatic Testing?

Any home or business owner who senses a possible leak needs a hydrostatic test. It is the first step in any effective repair process as no plumber wants to go full steam into a project without knowing exactly what they are getting into. A hydrostatic test will help anyone on the job to better understand the scope of work. If you have noticed reduced water pressure, mold or mildew, water stains, increased water bill, sagging ceilings, or peeling wallpaper, you likely have a leak and should call a professional plumber to perform these tests. Read below for more information about what exactly a hydrostatic test is:

This type of test is performed on a home or building’s sanitary sewer system to determine if there are water leaks present.

An inflatable test ball is inserted into the building or home mainline sewer cleanout and is then inflated in order to block or plug the main sewer line.

The sewer system is then filled with water up to the slab level, where the water level is observed for up to 15 minutes.

If the system does not fill to slab level, or if the water level begins to drop, water leaks are present in the sanitary sewer system.

The next phase of leak detection involves a combination of video camera pipe inspection and static leak isolation testing of PVC or cast iron sewer system.

First, we send one of our plumbers out to your property to check if you have cleanouts installed. If you do not, we will have to install them prior to any tests.

Second, once we have sorted out the cleanout situation, we can begin our hydrostatic testing process.

Third, if the results from the first hydrostatic test come back negative, meaning you have a leak in your home, we will then send a different plumber out to your property to do another test. As mentioned before, we always double check our tests to be 110% sure repairs need to be done.

Fourth, if the second test comes back saying you have a leak, then it is confirmed and we will begin the next steps. Typically if our plumbers can not see the leak with their own eyes, we will perform a static isolation test to determine the exact location of the leak.

Notice Before Testing.
